Welcome to NORTHERN IRELAND

Information about NORTHERN IRELAND The people of this country have had to wait a long time for peace, but they are wasting no time in enjoying and exploiting the opportunities it now brings. Its many tourist attractions and abundant natural beauty are reward enough for any visitor. It retains much of the character of its Gaelic past but the influence of the British is always evident, particularly in the industrial cities. It is a little known fact that the Titanic was built at Belfast’s shipyard, which was one of the worlds biggest and most important when shipbuilding was still a powerful industry. Like the rest of the island, Northern Ireland has in the past seen huge numbers of its citizens emigrate, many of them to America. This in turn has lead to its influence reaching far and wide. The best example of this is demonstrated by The Ulster American Trail, which details the family history of an impressive list of American presidents, film and sports stars who originated here. While it’s variety of culture and religious has been the source of many of the troubles, their festivals and celebrations are nevertheless spectacularly colourful and noisy affairs, and well worth seeing. Other highlights include the old walled town of Derry, the beautiful green landscape, and the World Heritage site, The Giants Causeway, an amazing series of hexagonal and octagonal columns stone stepping into the sea. While mythical legend will tell you they were built by a giant in competition with a foe, the scientific explanation given by geologists does nothing to diminish their wonder.
